Asbestos Textured decorative Coating (ARTEX)

Where do you find (asbestos) textured Decorative coating? (Artex).

Textured coatings were used to produce decorative finishes on ceilings and walls in domestic and commercial premises. In the past, it is commonly known as ‘Artex’ or TDC.

What does it look like?

This is dependent on the particular decorative finish, most common is the stipple effect or patterns (fans or swirls). TDC was originally white in colour but have often been painted over or stained and worse case damaged. To this day some plasterers and builders still dry scrape the stipples off to skim over and potentially contaminate themselves and others around them, please do not let this happen!.

TDC needs to be removed under semi-controlled conditions in a fully controlled environment and in most cases notified to the HSE, if a builder or plasterer says he can remove this, please make sure he has the insurance and most of all the training to do so.

If you are unsure if you have Asbestos within your Artex get it sampled.
